The next major update for Sins of a Solar Empire, the best-selling PC strategy game of 2008 that puts the player in command of an interstellar empire at war, is here!
Since this new update is huge and contains several brand new technologies, we're going to be offering it as an optional beta for those who want to help test it out and provide feedback.
Version 1.1 not only includes a host of play balancing changes but new content such as an updated graphics engine, updated visuals, new damage animations, and more. It also includes a new multiplayer system called "Alloy" which eliminates the need for configuring routers or changing port numbers.
This beta update will be available only through Stardock's new Impulse platform (
http://www.impulsedriven.com
).
See the full
change log
for all the details and the
beta information thread
for more information on obtaining the update.

does this impulse have any dodgy new copy protection schemes? Like securerom? Just looking at the other posts and starting to worry its gonna be messy if i have a computer crash.
Is this updatew really 1.5gig? If it is thats awesome!!!
No progress bar as far as I can see - dodgy.... oh wait it turned up 5minutes after i pressed start...
now that its started downloading I know how big it is and whether it will affect my ISP download limit.
Only 216mb

stupid question, where does the patch go after its downloaded?
I forgot to press archive, which i assume would have saved me a copy
I have tried windows temp and the stardock/impulse temp directories. I have always been able to archive from this before

No, it doesn't. It just isn't published on SDC or released as a standalone, which means you need Impulse installed and the game registered with a valid key to download.
There's no new DRM scheme

Doesn't go anywhere, it patches the game automatically
You always archive the whole game of whatever version, not the patch file itself, as far as I understand (I haven't used the archive feature yet).

I am still trying to register my game so I can get the beta. But when I put in the serial code and hit the Add Registration button I get ref:204. I know the e-mail and CD code are right so what is going on?

You would probably get an official response faster if you post in one of the running "Impulse issues" threads on the Impulse boards, since your issue is more with game registration than it is with the beta

Impulse is seriously gay.
I just downloaded the beta through it and now i cant even play my original SoaSE anymore, does anyone have any idea as to why this may have happened, or is it just that impulse is retarded, cause I dont want to have to wait another 5 hours to download the patch again (I only have a 512 kb connection), cheers.

So, the patch beta downloaded and works fine, but you didn't bother to read the patch notes that say you can't play 1.05 with it so now you're complaining?

Downloaded and played yesterday. Gotta say i love it so far. I had played myself to boredom since a while before the release of 1.5, feels great to be back. Such a nice beta patch!

Not unless you're talking about the Beta that is already out:
This beta update will be available only through Stardock's new Impulse platform sometime in mid-July.

Ok I'm getting a "Setup is not supported by Windows XP x64" message when trying to install this Impulse dealy. Could someone point me towards a fix for this, or the right place for an answer if this is the wrong place to ask.I'd like to try this beta on my currently fully working x64 copy of SoaSE
Tell XP to run the installer in 32-bit mode and that should do the trick.
Yeah, and how exactly do I do that? I tried the compatibility wizard, which didn't help. That's as far as I know how to go.

I
think
they intend to update the Forge Tools even before then.
