Another Chance for Pre-order Customers to Enter Stardock and Ironclad’s Epic Space Strategy Game Before Release
Published on June 13, 2007 By Yarlen In Sins News

This will be going out to the press tomorrow morning, but we wanted to give the Sins fans an early heads-up. There's a few new exclusive Sins shots for everyone below as well.

Gamers who missed the first phase of the Sins of a Solar Empire beta test will soon get another chance to play Stardock and Ironclad's highly anticipated strategy game ahead of its February 2008 release. Beta 2 launches on June 21 for anyone who has pre-ordered Sins of a Solar Empire via TotalGaming.net, and includes a ton of new features that will be included in the final game, as well as tweaks and fixes based on feedback from beta testers. June 21 will also see the launch of the new official Sins of a Solar Empire website at: https://www.sinsofasolarempire.com

Sins of a Solar Empire is an epic RT4X strategy game, providing grand-scale strategic gameplay in a real-time environment. Beta 2 once again allows would-be galactic commanders to play through the single-player sandbox game as the Trader Emergency Coalition (TEC), acting as high-level strategists to conquer new planets and to manage diplomatic relations, then seamlessly moving to the role of battle commander - directing individual ships to attack priority targets - via Sins' breakthrough 3D game engine.

In Beta 2, Ironclad Games has implemented an upgraded Bounty system including marauding Pirates, an improved interface including the new Event Tracking system, an expanded combat and tactical-counter model, improved planetary management, a new Capital Planet system, an expanded tech tree, upgraded strategic and tactical AI, even more strategic options, a refined economic system, improved graphics and much more. New players don't need to worry about getting lost in the new features, as Beta 2 also includes two new advanced tutorials and enhancements to existing tutorials to introduce new gameplay concepts.

Sins of a Solar Empire can be pre-ordered for $44.95 or 5 TGN tokens at: http://totalgaming.stardock.com/games/?id=sins. For more information about the game, visit the official website at: https://www.sinsofasolarempire.com

To get back on topic, any word for those of us with mod ambitions? I noticed in the patch notes that more mod functionality has been creeping in throughout beta 1, and I hope beta 2 blows me away with added functionality.

(I would love it if missiles and other projectiles that can be intercepted are in, so I don't have to kludge them into place as kamikaze frigates in my mod.)

I just built a computer myself with no prior knowledge to how computer's go together. If you have enough sense to figure out that the square peg goes in the square hole and the triangle peg into the triangle hole, then it isnt that hard to figure out how to put the pieces together. Generally the good idea is to make sure everything that you attach to the case is plugged into the power supply. Then if your graphics card needs to be plugged in then do so. After that everything else can really only fit one or two ways (and both are generally right). My computer costed a grand total of $1,666.45 heh, it's an evil computer, but it is amazing. Every game I've tried it on plays at max graphics and only once has it ever slowed down. This one time was when I was playing Supreme Commander on max graphics, and everyone on the map (I think 8 or so people) had around 800-900 units, which means about 6,800 individual units were on my screen and all were moving around and shooting at each other (god knows how many projectiles and missiles were shooting around). And when it slowed at this scene, I barely noticed it, I just noticed that my planes that I had called to attack one target were a second or so behind what the ETA had told me to expect (though admittedly the ETA is only an estimate).

Yarlen, since you recomended this site, do you know the voltage of the standard power supply they give there?

You don't need to worry about those nitty-gritty details. You just need to worry about overall wattage in a pre-built system like this.

Few comments:

1) You're going to need a better power supply than the default for this system (I'm looking at the second one). I would strongly recommend at least 550-600 watts. Video cards, especially under heavy 3D conditions, suck down a lot of juice. You don't want your system suddenly blue-screening or powering-off because your supply wasn't up to the task. It may cost more, but at least with ibuypower you can change it. With Dells you can't, and if our systems in the office are any indication, they tend to go with the bare minimum power supply. If you can't swing a better power supply, then I suggest downgrading the video card a bit.

2) Since it's only $20 more, I would upgrade the CPU to the E6420.

3) Hook yourself up with the free games/t-shirts they offer (what the heck, you're paying for it).

4) You can go with the certified heat sink/fan. No reason to upgrade this.

5) Hard drive - if you need to bring the cost down, get the 250GB one. You can always add another one in after-market (very easy, lots of step-by-step instructions online) for little money.

6) There's no point in getting 2 DVD/CD drives. Just get the 1 DVD/CD RW and save the money.

Those are my recommendations.

What is the point of the first one (plan old DVD drive)? The second one can read and write discs, so why do most computers come with two?

I took away the speakers and did the other stuff you suggested to upgrade/ take away and it comes to a total of $1,406 instead of $1,459. So I could point out to my parents that I'm saving them money (its also $300 cheaper than the alienware one. I actually made the two computers the same, on the site, and the buypower one was $588 dollars cheaper!).

Yarlen, thanks. Hopefully I'll get my parents to get me this for my birthday /Christmas (they're near each other). But my last question is still if they could pay it off over time (monthly thing) or if they have to do it all at once.

There's really no reason aside from being able to copy discs without using a temp image on the hard drive, and making more money for the OEMs.

BTW, looking forward to the new website as well.

hopefully the new website will have ship descriptions!

And more lore! And wouldn't be cool if beta testers could upload screenshots? There is kindof a lack of them (I know there was a thread on it but I think that thread died.)

I hope to put a screenshot of the new site mockup online tomorrow to give everyone a sneak peek.   The new site will feature several additional new screenshots, with updated content (though we'll continue to add new stuff after it's launched).
