Ironclad Games and Stardock have released a small update for Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion today. The new v1.91 build fixes two issues:

  • Fixes the user interface scaling for missions
  • Fixes 'Failed to Initialize COM' error

Both mods and save games should be unaffected by this update.

Cool.

Fixes 'Failed to Initialize COM' error

Confirmed.

Yup, didn't even notice, until I saw this announcement, that Sins had been updated when loading up a SoA2 save.

I love that after all this time you guys still work on this game. I still play it almost every day!  The outlaw sectors fits in very nicely adding new fun early game.  I still hope to see a new 64 bit version without memory limitations some day as I like to play really huge games, but they just get too slow when the memory starts running low .  Also it's great that I can read it on a 4k monitor now, that was a really big improvement and much appreciated, keep up the good work and many thanks!  BTW never got the COM error with it but now I guess I won't have to worry about it happening (in fact I've never had Sins crash on me unlike most every other game I use...not bad since my usage in now well over 3,000 hours not to mention the countless hours put in on the original Sins).

Will there be something new in the next sin of solar empire rebellion update like new kind of DLC or newest addition of units to existing faction?

*Going mad waiting for a Sins 2 Announcement.*

I am happy to see you guys continuing to improve on Sins, but come on guys! It's been 10 YEARS! Where is the 2nd one already?

Has anyone else had issues with crossplay (message about the executables being different) between the GoG.com and Steam versions of 1.91? My friends and I are trying to get back into Sins after a hiatus due to school and couldn't get a successful multiplayer game working when using the different store versions. 1.84 or 1.86 I think was the last version we successfully played together across the store versions.

Things tried:
1) Running a Verify/Repair on the GoG version didn't seem to make a difference.
2) If I fire up my Steam copy we were able to connect just fine, but I don't have access to the DLC I bought on GoG

Can not play on the local with bots and in general! After clicking on the Create button, nothing happens! The button becomes gray and it only remains to go out and play in solo! What could be the problem ? (I reinstalled the game, deleted all files before installation, and nothing changes)

That is likely your issue.  If the main game is on Steam, so does the DLC need to be purchased from / used on.  If you purchased the DLC from GOG, its not usable with the Steam main game.

Sorry for the confusion. I own the main game on both platforms. I purchased it again when it came out on GOG to support y'all and then bought the DLC for the game there as well.

However, if I try to play with the GOG copy (full game + all DLC) with a friend who has the Steam version, I get the error previously mentioned. There is at least one other person experiencing the same issue on the GOG support forum.

EDIT: According to Patokai on the GOG forum, he solved the problem by copying over the Steam version of the "Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion.exe" to his GOG copy. Is this a recommended workaround?
